Raymond Lefévre 1929 - 27/06/2008

As a a pianist, arranger and composer in a french kind of easy listening field, Raymond Lefevre is especially famous for his scores dedicated to several films starring Louis de Funès, especially in the series of "Gendarme" with the unforgettable: Douliou, Douliou, Saint-Tropez (in "Le Gendarme de Saint-Tropez") or "La soupe aux choux", "Faites sauter la banque","Les Grandes Vacances", or "Jo".

Raymond did not think some of his compositions would become so popular, but he became very famous in Japan (where he was rewarded with golden records) but also in Germany and in many other countries.

As he composed a lot for comedies, he suffered from a "light music" label. However, just listening to his scores will lead you to appreciate the melodic direction, accuracy and efficiency of his orchestrations alongside an immoderate taste for speed.

Gérard Calvi

Born in 1922, Gerard Calvi completed his studies at the Conservatoire de Paris with a presitigous Prix de Rome in composition.
He also composed many symphonic pieces, other ones for solists, chamber music alongside musical scores for theater and cinema.
In 1967, he started producing soundtracks for "Astérix le gaulois", then "Asterix & Cléopatra" animation movies: they will remain mythic.

In these tunes, bantering instruments dialog in the most garrulous and burlesque way: saxophones gossip while trombones chuckle. Calvi could be seen in some ways as the french Spike Jones: there is a health that solace you, an irrepressible joy for life, also with a slight touch of gaité à la Offenbach.

Catherine Lara

Violin virtuoso who started practicing at the age of five, Catherine Lara is mainly known in France for her 1983 unbearable "The diamond rocker".
In 1973, she recorded 3 albums as a first violinist with Janko Nilovic: songs intended to illustrate films or television soundtracks. Since then, Miss Lara also recorded several movie scores, including the one for Les hommes préfèrent les grosses (Gentlemen better like them fat) in 1980: an electro and very cheap comical opening theme.

Written in 1969 and recorded 1970, the symphonic rock oratorio "Death of Orion" is one of Manset's greatest work on arrangements in a chanson format. At that time, he was one of the few songwriters-producers to own his own recording studio: there occured many artists such as William Sheller or Ange.
Death of Orion is enlightened by the deep voice of Giani Esposito, and the clear tone of Anne Vanderlove, one of the most beautiful voice in the Latin Quarter, who brought her specific sweetness as a counterpoint.

The aura of mystery which developed around Manset arose from the scarcity of his media appearances, the lack of concerts, and moreover his belonging to a tradition of out-of-fashion characters: uncompromising, singular and poetic in his work. Every new album is a great and rare event, sometimes with defaults but always renewed, celebrated by an enthisiastically addicted community.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Death of Orion followed Manset's decision to produce in 1968 his own first EP Animal we are wrong

Jacky Chalard
- L'agonie(1974)

Jacky Chalard - La collecte des coeurs(1974)

Cult SF french vinyl, reissued by Finders Keepers: fantastic sound with a bass line like a real trip of the 70's. This LP is adapted from the book of science fiction Gilbert Deflez,
"I am alive, but I'm afraid." Quick, order it here.

Prologue in French, forgive me:

----------------------------------------------------------------

For info remember that Jacky Chalard was the bassist for Dynasty Crisis, famous Group in France 70, who has accompanied Michel Polnareff in years 72.

L' ordinateur

Computer is a regular source of inspiration for singers.
Today, I'd like to introduce three artists who were afraid of a big computer.

Here we have a warning against the machine of futur !

Le grand ordinateur - P. Abrial/Le Bellego/J. Plait - 1969

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
In this one, Mr Computer is described as someone who doesn't know how to laugh and sing as children!

L'ordinateur - l'Abbe Noel Colombier - 196?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Last but not least, this jazzy piece was used for a film with Alain Delon titled "Pour la peau d'un flic". There is however no computer in history !

R.I.P. Bobby Hebb 1938 - 03/08/2010

He was the man of one song, but what a song!
Bobby Hebb wrote SUNNY in 1963, twice shocked by the murder of Bob Kennedy, and two days later, of his own brother.
It's one of the most covered song in the recording history: Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Marvin Gaye, James Brown, Stevie Wonder and among french singers: Eddy Mitchell, Richard Anthony, Christophe Willem etc. ...

Bobby Hebb - Sunny (1965)

Boney M - Sunny (1976)

Ella Fitzgerald and Tom Jones - Sunny (1970)

Dusty Springfield - Sunny (1967)

I like very much this cover, so Italo saxo lounge !

Michel Piccoli, my master !

Michel Piccoli is the greatest French actor, well ahead of our National Gégé. He is a superstar, he is capable of anything.

I present a series of very naughty pictures from a very strange movie entitled GRANDEUR NATURE "Live Size"(1974). A story of love doll !

Eric Charden, le Gary Glitter Français

He 's been a hot ticket in the sixties, and launched the career of his wife as the Beatnik Queen Beauty 1966. Then, inspired by Roswell affair or ELO, he 's been cooking a commercial music in a Space-Disco Supermarket style.

He's not the best of all, but he 's worth rediscovering, as his music was quite innovating at this time.

Take the trip !

Although "Bikers Movies" are now a bit outdated, there was a few ones before Easy Rider(1969), and a lot after.
"Bikers" do not frighten anybody anymore, it is very sad.

I haven't seen them yet, but there are two incredible movies you shouldn't miss: have a look at the "Cinémathèque" program titled CINEMA BIS.

Nicolas Peyrac - confusion

Nicolas Peyrac is an enigmatic man for me.
I found hundred records of this very popular artist in all the second hands of France .
Who is he and where does he come from ?

A rather dark musical extract, but very rhythmical, close to François de Roubaix.

Bernard Estardy - 1939/2006

Bernard Estardy ( aka Le Baron de Mehouilles, The Baronet ) is the hidden genius behind many of the biggest hits in 70's French "variété" music.
As a fabulous musician and talented organist, Mister Estardy first collaborated with Nino Ferrer in the 60's, and is also the one responsible for most of "our national & tenderly regretted CLOCLO" (Claude Francois) music hits...
In the middle of the 60's, along with Georges Chatelain, he created the "experimental sound" STUDIO C.B.E !

Used to be an unfindable one, recently reissued by the VADIM record label (and identically to the original piece). Bravo guys !

Mythic record and a scarce one too, somewhere between scat, jerk with an hypnotic touch.

This title was the biggest HIT of this group of Dutch studio.
